Electronic tagging of Bluefin Tunas from the Maltese spawning ground suggests size-dependent migration dynamics

چکیده

The purse seine fishery in the Mediterranean represents about 60% of international catch for Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus). Yet, tagging operations from this segment fisheries remain rare and despite its potential importance management, several aspects related to migratory behavior these areas unaddressed. In present manuscript, we report results two carried out on a commercial seiner during consecutive years spawning ground around Maltese islands Central Sea. During operations, eight individuals were tagged showed that larger fish (> 200 cm) undertook large-scale migrations outside Mediterranean, whereas smaller did not. This study suggests size might affect Tuna, underlines grounds address scientific questions having significant management implications.

Spawning Dynamics and Size Related Trends in Reproductive Parameters of Southern Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus maccoyii

Knowledge of spawning behaviour and fecundity of fish is important for estimating the reproductive potential of a stock and for constructing appropriate statistical models for assessing sustainable catch levels. Estimates of length-based reproductive parameters are particularly important for determining potential annual fecundity as a function of fish size, but they are often difficult to estim...

Study of spawning season and spawning ground of soboor (Tenualosa ilisha, Ham. Bunch., 1822) during its migration in Khuzestan rivers

During 12 months of sampling, from 17 stations, 327 specimens of Soboor fish Tenualosa ilisha, including 120 females, 113 males and 86 immature were caught. Total length (TL) of the fishes was 120-500mm. Maximum diameters of soboor ova 0.795mm and the ova with diameter more than 0.7 mm released at one spawning round. Temporal and spatial distribution of ova diameter corresponding to GSI changes...

Spawning Behaviour and Post-Spawning Migration Patterns of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) Ascertained from Satellite Archival Tags

Spawning behaviour of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) was investigated using electronic satellite tags deployed in the western Mediterranean spawning ground, around the Balearic Islands (years 2009-2011). All the fish were tagged underwater and released within schools. In general, the fish tagged in the same year/school displayed common migratory trends. Following extended residency aro...

Demographic Structure, Sex Ratio and Growth Rates of Southern Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus maccoyii) on the Spawning Ground

The demographics of the southern bluefin tuna (SBT) Thunnus maccoyii spawning stock were examined through a large-scale monitoring program of the Indonesian longline catch on the spawning ground between 1995 and 2012. The size and age structure of the spawning population has undergone significant changes since monitoring began. There has been a reduction in the relative abundance of larger/olde...
